Dog portraits from your photo take about 30 seconds here: upload a clear picture of your dog, choose Royal, Oil Painting, Watercolor or Line Art, and the AI paints your dog with its real ears, coat color and markings. Your first preview is free, and the HD file is ready to print.

How to turn a dog photo into a portrait

  1. 1

Pick a photo with both ears

Ears carry a lot of a dog's personality. Choose a shot where both are in frame, eyes are sharp, and your dog is not mid-shake.

  2. 2

    Choose style and costume

Royal with a King, General or Knight costume suits big personalities. Oil Painting and Watercolor are quieter. Type your dog's name for the gold plate.

Made for dogs of every shape

Keeps the breed details

Folded ears, bat ears, a curled tail, a docked tail, merle patches, brindle stripes. The painter is told to copy them, not tidy them up.

Respects older faces

A white muzzle and cloudy eyes are part of who a senior dog is. We keep them instead of painting a younger version.

Costumes that fit dogs

King, Duke, Admiral, General and Knight come with capes, medals or armor sized to the dog, from a chihuahua to a mastiff.

No waiting weeks

Artist dog portraits usually take two to six weeks. Here you see the result in about 30 seconds and can try another style on the spot.

Two dogs, or you and your dog

Upload up to four photos for a multi-dog portrait, or one of you and one of your dog for a pet and owner piece.

Print it anywhere

The 2048 × 2048 px JPEG prints sharply to about 8 × 8 inches at any photo lab or canvas shop near you.

Custom dog portraits that look like your dog, not the breed

Most dog owners can spot their own dog in a park full of the same breed. The difference lives in small things: one ear that never stands up, a pink spot on a black nose, the white sock on only one paw. Generic dog portraits miss those. Ours are made from your photo, and the AI is instructed to keep every one of those details exactly where it is.

Mixed breeds work just as well as purebreds, sometimes better, because there is no textbook face for the AI to fall back on. A rescue mutt with a lopsided blaze comes back with the same lopsided blaze.

Dog portraits from photos: how to get a good shot

Dogs move, so the photo is often the hardest part. These tricks help:

  • Hold a treat just above your phone. Your dog looks into the lens and the ears come up.
  • Make a squeaky noise right before you shoot to get a head tilt.
  • Go outside or near a window. Black dogs in particular need soft daylight, or the face turns into one dark shape.
  • Use burst mode and pick the frame with the sharpest eyes.
  • For long-haired breeds, brush the fur away from the eyes first. If the AI cannot see the eyes, it has to guess them.
  • Old photos are fine for a dog who has passed. Scan prints at the highest setting, then see our pet memorial portraits for a gentler style.

Personalized dog portrait ideas by personality

Match the style to the dog, not to the room. A proud German shepherd looks right as a General with medals. A corgi puppy is perfect as a naval Admiral. A calm old Lab suits a quiet Oil Painting or a soft watercolor. The goofy one who steals socks belongs in Pop Art or Cartoon, and there are more ideas on the funny pet portraits page.

If you want the full royal treatment with crowns, ruffs and velvet, the renaissance pet portraits page goes deeper into costumes. If you prefer a painted look with visible brushwork and no costume at all, see dog painting styles.

How much does a dog portrait cost?

Artist dog portraits painted by hand usually start around $100 and take weeks, and the price climbs with canvas size and the number of dogs. Print shops like Crown & Paw or West & Willow charge about $15 to $40 for a digital file made by their designers and $60 to $170 for a canvas.

Here your first dog portrait is free to preview and free to download in HD after you sign up. After that, one dog costs 40 credits and two to four dogs cost 60. Packs start at $5.99 for 250 credits, enough for six single portraits, and never expire. Every pack is listed on the pricing page.

Artist or AI: which one is right for you

Choose a human artist if you want a one-of-a-kind physical painting and you have time to wait. Choose AI if you want to see several versions today, pay a few dollars, and print the one you love. These are digital portraits, not hand-painted canvases, and we say that plainly. Many people do both: they try a few looks here first, then show the favorite to a painter as a reference.

Have a cat too? The cat portrait page has tips for animals who refuse to look at a camera.

What dog owners do with their portraits

Above the dog bed

Frame an 8 × 8 inch print and hang it where your dog actually sleeps. Guests always notice.

Gotcha day gifts

Mark an adoption anniversary with a portrait and the dog's name on a gold plate.

Gifts for dog lovers

Send a friend a portrait of their dog for a birthday. All you need is a photo from their social feed.

Puppy portraits to keep

Puppies change fast. Make a portrait at eight weeks and another at one year to compare.
